World Analysis - Formaldehyde & Resins

Formaldehyde is the simplest and most commercially important aldehyde. Urea-, phenol- and melamine-formaldehyde resins (UF, PF and MF resins) accounted for about 63% of world demand in 2011; other large applications include polyacetal resins, pentaerythritol, MDI, 1,4-butanediol and hexamethylenetetramine. Most formaldehyde producers are concerned primarily with satisfying captive requirements for derivatives and/or supplying local merchant sales. Formaldehyde is usually produced close to the point of consumption since it is fairly easy to make, is costly to transport and can develop problems associated with stability during transport. As a result, world trade in formaldehyde is minimal.

Construction/remodeling activity, vehicle and furniture production, and original equipment manufacturers (OEM) account for most world consumption of formaldehyde. Demand for these markets is greatly influenced by general economic conditions. As a result, demand for formaldehyde largely follows the patterns of the leading world economies. Formaldehyde resins are used predominantly in the wood products industry as adhesives. Growth of these resins is strongly correlated to construction/remodeling activity (which accounts for over 50% of consumption), and to a lesser degree, to the automotive industry.

IHS Chemical World Analysis – Formaldehyde & Resins examines these markets within their historical context, while also offering a ten-year outlook for the Formaldehyde & Resins markets around the globe. Strategic planners and managers receive accurate, unbiased data and analysis to help them anticipate the industry’s future trends and developments and to make optimal decisions under conditions of great uncertainty.

IHS Chemical World Analysis - Formaldehyde & Resins examines historical trends and long term projections for supply/demand, production, capacity, and trade of the global Formaldehyde & Resins industry over a 16-year period (five-year history, base year, ten-year forecast).

Included with the IHS Chemical World Analysis - Formaldehyde & Resins is 12-month’s access to IHS Chemical’s online capacity and supply/demand databases, with updates to the capacity database as they occur and one update to the supply/demand database.
