Staying in the Zone
Challenge

The customer’s situation called for reaching reserves through horizontal wells. Because horizontal drilling can cost three times as much as traditional vertical drilling, it was critical to accurately target the reservoir.

Solution

IHS tailored a solution around IHS Kingdom’s Dynamic Depth Conversion (DDC) to enable the customer to build and maintain a virtual velocity model and automatically convert seismic results from time to depth. This helped on-site engineers and geologists guide drilling for optimal placement of the well. Any necessary geosteering adjustments were then guided by ongoing, real-time data acquisition in the field, which incorporated stacking velocities to help quickly generate accurate reservoir models. This was completed in minutes instead of hours.

Result

By integrating seismic information with well data, engineers and geophysicists were able to coordinate their activities more quickly and efficiently. The corrections made on-site by tracking actual drilling results against seismic data enabled the client to continually refine the plan—a highly effective way of finding the zone and staying there.
