Arthur Dhont

Senior Analyst, Latin America

Arthur Dhont is an Americas Analyst at IHS. He specializes in political, security and operational risks in Latin America and the Caribbean, specifically Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guatemala and Honduras as well as a number of Caribbean territories. Arthur regularly advises clients on expropriation, contract frustration, civil unrest, security and business disruption risks in these countries, and has been invited on several occasions to brief the United Kingdom Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Arthur has a keen interest in sustainable business development and organized crime related security risks.

Arthur received an MA in War, Violence and Security from the University of Sussex in 2010. Prior to Joining IHS, Arthur was a Researcher at Maplecroft and has previously worked for the International Crisis Group in Bogota, Colombia.

Carlos Cardenas

Head of Latin America, Country Risk, IHS Markit

Carlos Cardenas manages the IHS Markit Country Risk Americas team, and is responsible for the generation of commercially relevant political and violent risks forecasts for a variety of sectors in Latin America, including energy, mining and re-insurance. Carlos specializes in assessing the business environment for several countries in Latin America, covering key risks affecting current or potential investors. These include expropriation, non-payment, contract frustration, civil unrest, business disruption, security and operational risks. Carlos briefs clients interested in Latin America on a regular basis helping them to understand how their operations are affected by the role and influence of decision makers and pressure groups.

Carlos has an MA in International Political Economy from the University of Birmingham, and LLM in Petroleum Law and Policy from the University of Dundee and BA in International Studies from Universidad Central de Venezuela.

Laurence Allan, Ph.D.

Director – Research and Analysis Europe & CIS, Country Risk, IHS Markit Dr. Laurence Allan leads the Europe and CIS team at IHS Markit, assessing and forecasting political and violent risks in the region.

Brian Lawson

Global Economic Consultant

Brian Lawson specializes in the Eurozone crisis, fixed income and global commodities. He also focuses on political and violent risk developments in Spain and Portugal. Brian joined IHS through the acquisition of Exclusive Analysis, where he had worked since 2010. Prior to joining Exclusive Analysis, Brian was Head of International Debt Syndicate at Nomura, having served as COO of the Global Markets Division. Prior to Nomura, he was Head of Global Fixed Income at ABN AMRO for two years.

Earlier in his 31-year investment banking career, Brian also worked for Deutsche Bank AG and Morgan Grenfell and Co. Limited in several senior roles. Brian is a Senior Adviser to the International Capital Markets Association, having served previously as a board member of the association for the maximum six-year term and he remains a member of its disputes panel. He is a member of the IHS Global Forecast Committee. Brian currently lives in Valencia, Spain and visits London regularly.

Brian received an MA in Economics from the University of Cambridge.
