Alex Whitworth, Associate Director, IHS Energy, is the research manager for the IHS China Gas, Power and Coal service. He is also responsible for provincial-level coal and power market models and outlooks, and prepares regular China Power Market Briefings. In recent years he was a lead author for the multi-client studies "Coal Rush: The Future of China's Coal Market" and “Solving the Tangram: China’s Regional Gas and Power Scenarios.” Among his areas of expertize are power transmission, coal conversion technology and inter-fuel competition in various sectors, and he closely tracks policy and macro-economic trends in the China market. Based in Beijing, Mr. Whitworth has worked in China for many years and is fluent in Mandarin Chinese; he holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree from the University of Auckland, an MS in Engineering from Columbia University, and an MA in Public and International Affairs from Princeton University.
