Basel Abusharkh obtained his PhD in Chemical Engineering from University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1996 and was a Professor of Chemical Engineering at KUPM for 14 years. In 2011, he founded InoChem, an industrial company for producing inorganic chemicals with a capital of $600 million and annual sales of $270 million. In 2015, he founded IDEA Salt and Water Company (ISW), a $200 million company for producing desalinated water and concentrated brine. In the same year, he also founded Hyrec, a company for developing purification and concentration technologies. He is currently CTO of ISW and Hyrec. He has numerous scientific publications and patents, some of which have been licensed to the chemical industry and made numerous presentations at international forums. He also served as advisor to the Ministry of Economy and Planning and Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) in Saudi Arabia and to several international companies on matters related to water, energy and industrialization.
Anna Giatti is Director Business Development Chlor-Alkali & Chloromethanes at AkzoNobel Industrial Chemicals. She studied Chemistry and obtained a Ph.D. in Electrochemistry at the University of Ferrara, Italy. Starting her career in Research and Development, she invented and patented a new electrochemical process for the rubber industry, she was responsible for the development of a new type of fuel cell and headed projects leading to several new products for different kinds of industry.
Having left the R&D arena Anna fulfilled different technical and commercial positions. She was responsible for the introduction of AkzoNobel’s mTA-salt which offers the membrane electrolysis chlorine producers a reduction in their energy consumption of more than 5%.
Being the Director - Business Development, one of her current responsibilities is leading programs that further reduce the carbon footprint of selected chlor-alkali value chains.

Damián Gumpel is Vice President for the Global Caustic & Vinyls business, a products portfolio within the Chlor-Alkali Products & Vinyls Division of Olin Corporation. He has the P&L responsibility for Olin’s Caustic Soda, Ethylene Dichloride and Vinyl Chloride Monomer businesses.
He joined Olin in 2015 via the Blue Cube acquisition from The Dow Chemical Company, having worked at Dow from 2009-2015 in various business management roles spanning Caustic Soda, Hydrochloric Acid, Ethylene Dichloride, Vinyl Chloride Monomer, Alcohols and Glycol Ethers.
Damián was a Senior Manager at Accenture from 1998-2007 where he led global I/T transformation and outsourcing engagements for Fortune 100 energy and financial services companies.
He holds a Masters of Business Administration with Honors from The University of Chicago Booth School of Business and a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin.
Yves Heroes holds a Master’s degree in Bio-Engineering and an Executive MBA (K.U. Leuven).
He spent 27 years in Sales and Marketing with Tessenderlo Chemie – LVM (Belgium), where he was Director of the Business Unit PVC-chloralkali from 2006 till LVM was divested in August, 2011. At that time, he was a member of the management committees of EuroChlor and ECVM. For many years, he was an active and critical member/chairman of EuroChlor’s statistical committee.
After leaving LVM, he provided in-depth market studies to individual clients and advised financial analysts.
In January 2014, he joined Kem One (France) as Vice President Sales & Marketing.
Hazel is a Chemical Engineer/MBA that brings almost 40 years of industry experience to the IHS Chemicals team. Hazel holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering with honors from Auburn University. She completed her Master of Business Administration studies at Sacred Heart University with special emphasis on Marketing.
During her career, Hazel has amassed broad experience in the chemical industry. She has held a variety of positions in Engineering and Management including, but not limited to Manufacturing, Finance, Risk Management, Strategic Planning and Marketing. She began her career with Union Carbide Corporation (UCC) in the Ethylene Oxide/Ethylene Oxide derivatives value chain. During her time at UCC, she was awarded the prestigious “Chairman’s Award” for her contributions. Subsequently, Hazel joined Nexen Inc., a Canadian Oil, Gas and Chemicals company with an assignment to establish and implement strategic marketing for the company’s Chlor-alkali and Sodium Chlorate businesses. In 2005, Hazel worked on the IPO team that spun Nexen’s chemical business out as Canexus. She continued to contribute to Canexus until 2014, when she joined Huntsman Corporation to manage global marketing for Water Treatment, Pulp & Paper and Mining Chemicals businesses.
Hazel joined IHS Markit in August 2016 in the position of Global Director, Chlor-Alkali/Vinyls. In her current role, she leads the Global Market Advisory Services team for Chlor-Alkali and Vinyls from the IHS Markit office in Houston, Texas. A native of Colorado, Hazel enjoys outdoor and community activities. She is a member of the Auburn University Engineering Alumni Advisory Council, the University of Colorado Parent Leadership Society and the Houston Executive Service Corps (ESCH). ESCH is a nationwide network of nonprofit management support consulting organizations made up of executives and professionals who have had senior level experience in business, government or nonprofits and are dedicated to improving the quality of life in the communities they serve.
Tuomas Mustonen has an international career with different functional experiences within Stora Enso Group in the past 15 years. He started in 2002 in London (UK) by working in Sales, followed with experience in Sweden in 2006 in one of Stora Enso’s paper mills and handling Finance and Controlling. In 2007, he moved in Dusseldorf, Germany, to work again in Sales, and in 2010 he took the responsibility of establishing and leading a new Customer Service organization for international operations, located in Karlsruhe, Germany.
Throughout his career, Mr. Mustonen has worked with and led several development projects, including responsibility for leading a major cost restructuring program within Stora Enso Group in 2013. Since 2014, his main focus has been within Sourcing, first in fibre based raw materials, and starting from 2015 onwards he has been head of Sourcing for Stora Enso Group’s division Biomaterials as well as leading the sourcing for the global category of Chemicals. Stora Enso Group’s total annual spend in Chemicals in 2014 was almost 1 billion EUR, and Stora Enso is one of the biggest purchasers of caustic soda in pulp, paper and board industry, globally.
Tuomas Mustonen is a Finnish citizen, born in 1979. He has Master of Science degree in Industrial Engineering and Management from the Technical University of Tampere, Finland, further management education from IMD Business School, Lausanne, Switzerland and Diploma in Global Sourcing from Aalto University Professional Development, Helsinki, Finland.
David O'Connell joined Brenntag following the acquisition of Albion Chemicals Group, UK in 2006. David was Managing Director of Brenntag UK and Ireland from 2007 to 2009, after which he transferred to the European Headquarters in Mülheim, Germany and is currently Commercial Director, Industrial Chemicals, for the EMEA region. David's principle responsibility is to lead Brenntag's major supplier relationships and to set product strategies for the region. David has worked in chemical distribution and chemical manufacturing for over 25 years with a variety of responsibilities in sales, business management and operations.

The German based international company manages complex supply chains for both chemical manufacturers and consumers by simplifying market access to thousands of products and services. It combines a global network with outstanding local execution. Chlor-alkali is Brenntag’s largest business by volume today on a global basis.
Mr. Detlef Sagner is a Senior Trader in Tricon Energy Ltd., for their Chlor-alkali business and his primary role is the Caustic and EDC trade, specializing in West Europe region. He is based out of their Germany office in Cologne. He is married to Marlies and has three kids.
Tricon Energy Limited, is a USA based trading and distribution company in petrochemicals, polymers, fuels and dry bulk. The Tricon Group has operations in 20 countries and a global presence in over 100 countries, trading in excess of 14 million MT and over US$3.5 Billion in revenues.
Detlef went through a commercial/chemical education program in Bayer AG and became a Product Manager of Chemicals in Bayer Germany. He was also deputed on an overseas assignment to Mexico to handle the sales and distribution in the USA/Mexico region before coming back to Germany as the Export Head of Bayer Caustic business.
Detlef joined Tricon Energy in early 2011 and has more than 28 years of Global experience in the Product management, distribution and trading of Organic chemicals and Chlor/Alkali industry having worked for German major, Bayer AG for 13 years and then subsequently working as a Business Manager and Global trader for Caustic Soda and EDC.
A passionate marketer, Arun Tyagi is an enterprising professional with over 15 years of proven track record of strategizing, developing and executing marketing plans and market development programs, in the B2B and Internet space. At present, as a head of marketing with Nuberg, he is responsible for building Nuberg brand, setting up teams and processes, building marketing communication for customers and prospective customers, product teams, BD teams and employees.
Arun began his career in 1999, selling customized ERP and CRM products. Earlier, he worked with companies such as GE Consumer Finance, UK etc.
