One of the world’s largest energy companies – a Fortune 100 leader in global oil, gas and chemical markets – turned a potential business disruption into a new opportunity to drive efficiency and innovation by providing 9,000+ worldwide employees with easy access to a major catalog publication via a single online platform.

Change is inevitable. It can be big or small, sudden or gradual, and its impact can be negative or positive. For businesses, the ability to effectively manage change is a key factor in determining their ability to achieve success. Any company that takes potential disruptions in stride or, better yet, transforms them into opportunities for a leap forward, can gain a new competitive edge.
Last year, one of the world’s largest energy companies – a Fortune 100 leader in global oil, gas and chemical markets – confronted a business challenge when its engineering corps faced the loss of access to critical, trusted information resources. The Corporate Librarian for this oil and gas giant discovered that one of its principal subscriptions was undergoing a major change, and its current vendor would no longer provide access to key resources from McGraw-Hill, including Perry’s Chemical Engineering Handbook. McGraw-Hill is a preeminent technical publisher, providing best-in-class engineering content for more than 100 years, and loss of access to authoritative McGraw-Hill titles like Perry's increased the risk of disruption for the oil and gas company's engineering teams.
In order to assess the potential impact of this disruption, the Corporate Librarian decided to conduct a survey of the user community. She had regularly used such surveys in the past to measure engagement among users of the company’s library services and gain fresh insights into the information needs of her colleagues. She had found that the surveys were particularly useful when company leaders needed to make important policy and resourcing decisions.
This survey generated a surge of responses that showed a massive 85 percent of the user community required access to Perry’s Chemical Engineering Handbook. That publication was the single most requested item identified in the survey, and it was therefore deemed essential.
Realizing that the company’s global user community would be left without access to critical McGraw-Hill content, the Corporate Librarian set out to find a new vendor who could provide all of the information resources that her company’s engineers, scientists and other technical professionals needed. That’s when she turned to IHS.
Moving Quickly to Find the Right Solution
After consulting with the IHS Product Design team, the Corporate Librarian concluded that her company could achieve its objectives by implementing a new solution called IHS Knowledge Collections. IHS Knowledge Collections would leverage the strength of AccessEngineering, a subscription platform that offers online access to authoritative, cross-disciplinary content from McGraw-Hill. IHS is the sole distributor for AccessEngineering to the corporate market, providing exclusive online subscription access to the curated content from McGraw-Hill’s online technical reference library of more than 500 authoritative, branded titles – including the user community’s top choice, Perry’s Chemical Engineering Handbook. Through its Knowledge Collections offering, IHS combines trusted content from leading technical publishers like McGraw-Hill with powerful search technology, allowing engineers to accelerate their research and problem-solving by up to 30 percent.
The company’s engineers now have easier access to the information they need to solve real-world problems faster, improve their productivity, and keep their skills up to date.
By providing more than 9,000 worldwide employees around the world with easy access to a catalog of McGraw Hill publications via a single online platform (with a user-friendly interface), the company turned a potential business disruption into a new opportunity to drive efficiency and innovation.
Expanding Resources and Capabilities
In addition to ensuring access to Perry’s Chemical Engineering Handbook, the corporate library could now offer its user community access to a dramatically enhanced set of information resources including:
The company’s engineers and technical experts could also save time and effort with new online research tools. Users could quickly bookmark and label content, annotate text, drop push pins on interactive graphs, save searches, enable email alerts, and get hardcopies of the content they needed with chapter- by-chapter printing from PDFs. As a global organization with a distributed and dynamic workforce, the company also benefitted from being able to offer its engineers mobile access to AccessEngineering from their tablets and smartphones.
Turning Adversity into Opportunity
This energy industry giant remains a frontrunner for innovation and productivity because it turns changes and challenges into opportunity. By working with IHS to provide thousands of engineers around the world with immediate access to vital technical information through one consolidated, easy-to-use platform, the Corporate Librarian turned a potential stumbling block into a leap forward for the entire company.
The company’s engineers now have easier access to the information they need to solve real-world problems faster, improve their productivity, and keep their skills up to date… so this industry leader can stay ahead of the competition.
