Well Monitoring - Get Data Faster
How is it done?
Operational data is entered in the field, field office, or via SCADA and the entire team can immediately view it, enabling field staff to promptly take action on issues. With over 2,300 pumpers trained, our clients are doing away with paper gauge sheets or emailing spreadsheets.
As a pumper, you enter data via computer laptop or netbook, and you can make corrections to the data immediately. You can look at historical data to track wells and see the benefit of FieldDIRECT doing the calculations for you, eliminating the pumpers' weekly and monthly reporting.Well data is then sent to a central database where graphs and reports can be viewed in Production Explorer, the desktop application.
"I can look at all my leases in 10 minutes. I can see my production to make sure it's not low and look for any changes. I look at graphs for about a month going back. It's easier to see than on a ledger."
- Rodney Kaus, Mack Energy, Field Production Foreman
Case study (pdf)Reporting - One source for your operational data
With one source for data, FieldDIRECT functions as a communication tool for your team to identify and react to problems instead of spending time gathering information. Operational data, including consolidated summaries, is available anytime to anyone on your team from pumpers to managers. How is it done?
Once the pumper inputs the data, office staff can produce reports. In Production Explorer, the desktop application, the team can view allocated production at well, field and project levels, as well as specific data like gauges, meter readings, and pressures. Also, multiple reports can be generated with the Report Writer, or data can be exported to various other applications.By analyzing current data and study trends using daily field data, you can begin to proactively manage production. FieldDIRECT data integrates with a multitude of other applications allowing accountants and others to meet their particular needs. Additionally, you can allow working interest partners access to production information as your operations dictate.
"FieldDIRECT is allowing our technical staff to devote their time to analysis instead of creating reports."
- Steve Harris, VP Operations, O'Brien Energy Company
Case Study (pdf)Monitor your fields
Because FieldDIRECT data provides surveillance abilities, field staff and engineers can proactively manage fields. How is it done?
Using Production Explorer, the desktop application, you can create charts, graphs and reports to view averages and totals for different time frames. Because you can see when a well falls below expectation or view the production of a specific area, you can swiftly move resources to identify and correct the problem in the field. With PowerTools® you can compare current performance to the decline curve forecast, evaluate the performance of new wells, and use area trending utilizing bubble and contour maps, as well as evaluate the economics of field operations.
"Engineers, supervisors and lease operators review FieldDIRECT each day to look at production and check for areas where wells are down or having trouble, and where to concentrate that day's efforts."
- Mike Middlebrook, VP Production, Range Resources
Case Study (pdf)Increase your operational efficiencies
Comprehensively manage your operations by viewing entire fields at a time. Coupled with IHS PowerTools, production forecasts can be compared to daily production using near real-time data. Because FieldDIRECT is a hosted service, money is not tied up buying expensive servers nor spending time maintaining them. How is it done?
Operational efficiencies are achieved by recording well data electronically, shortening reporting cycles for internal and external needs, and identifying and correcting problems months earlier. You enable increased production by deploying staff and resources at critical times."With FieldDIRECT, we can evaluate a well's production, whether it is a new completion, rework or downhole failure, with minimal effort and time. This allows us to employ our equipment and personnel resources efficiently, both of which are costly and, of course, always in short supply."
- Mike Stewart, VP Operations, Stanolind

Tell me about the implementation process.
While timing varies based on each company’s operational size, the number of locations and pumpers, our trainers follow this process:
- Assess Your Operations: Our trainer learns the intricacies of your operations and customizes the implementation process to fit your business rules, roles, and third party interfaces.
- Build Wells: Our trainer builds your wells in FieldDIRECT.
- Train Users: Our trainer travels to your locations training users from pumpers in the field to the executives in the office.
- Monitor Data: Our trainer monitors the production data for a couple of weeks to make sure data entry is going smoothly.
- Mentor Staff: Our trainer follows up with in-depth training that allows individuals to ask questions that arise after using software and before bad habits develop. Experience has shown our customers that the benefits of Mentoring result in more useful data and maximizes the service.
This approach, coupled with dedicated and knowledgeable trainers who are familiar with field conditions and understand oil production needs, ensures continuity throughout training so you can focus on your operations and not on training your staff.
Analysis and Reporting
What do pumpers and foremen think about FieldDIRECT?
Tools include graphs, pivot tables, exception and variance reports, and other pre-formatted monthly and daily reports. A custom report writer allows you to create detailed, sorted, and summarized reports that you can easily share.
Can I share my data with Working Interest Partners?
Absolutely! After you allow them access, partners can look at data on properties that they participate in without contacting you. This saves you time and resources gathering data, while allowing partners see to data as often as they want. This also works for banks, third-party reserves services, or any properties you may be looking to divest.
Links and Connections to Other Software
Is it easy to get FieldDIRECT data into other software?
Yes. You can “Copy” and “Paste” data from FieldDIRECT into various applications, as well as export pre-formatted and custom reports into various formats including .xls, .csv and .txt; or query the data through Microsoft Access.
Can I compare forecasted production to actual production?
Yes. You can use IHS’ PowerTools to view FieldDIRECT daily data and production forecasts together. Since PowerTools looks at the FieldDIRECT database directly, the data is as current as your last update.
Our clients use FieldDIRECT and PowerTools together for:
- Day-to-Day Production Optimization: Field engineers and foremen can use PowerTools in order to visually detect when a well’s production rate is below the intended field decline rate, thus moving beyond monitoring and into production surveillance workflows.
- Economic Analysis on Well Repairs: PowerTools provides production techs an accurate analysis of historical performance with the ability to see downtime documentation from the field and explain anomalies in historical trends. Also useful is doing an economic analysis on proposed workovers and repairs by modeling anticipated well performance using daily data and IHS historical production data.
- Production vs. Sales Data: You can compare production (vs. sales) forecast to actual daily production in states like Oklahoma and Kansas where public data is recorded as sales rather than production data.
- New Well Economics: Production and reservoir engineers can model scenarios based on historical volumes alongside current production rates by way of FieldDIRECT surveillance. Get faster and better forecasts using FieldDIRECT for new wells to confirm reserves after a new drill, since monthly historical data can be delayed up to six months
- Reserves Forecasting: General managers can use PowerTools in order to determine the future of the field development and abandonment through use of long and short term data from the field. Perform longer term performance comparisons that may not be obvious on a daily basis.
FieldDIRECT and PowerTools provide more analysis options and a more complete picture of how wells are performing compared to expected production.
How easy is it to connect FieldDIRECT data to PowerTools?
Connecting to FieldDIRECT data is as easy as creating a new project in PowerTools and selecting "IHS FieldDIRECT®" project as the data sources
