Some of the key aspects of the oil and gas industry that are addressed in API standards include exploration and production; refining; fire protection and safety; petroleum measurement and marine transportation. API standards also reference offshore production, drilling, structural pipe, pipeline, health and environmental issues, valves and storage tanks to name a few.

The API Standards Collection is divided into the subject sections outlined below. Each section and subsection is available from IHS as a separate subscription service, allowing you to subscribe only to those documents you frequently need to reference.

Environmental and Safety
Environmental and Safety covers critical health and environmental issues: air; fire protection; natural resource damage assessment; pollution prevention; soil and groundwater; environmental stewardship; storage tanks; surface water; and waste.

Exploration and Production
This section includes numerous documents related to topics such as:

• Oilfield equipment and materials
• Offshore structures

Inspection Measurement
Includes all Manual of Petroleum Measurement Standards (API MPMS) and additional API documents related to piping inspection, wind tunnel testing, correction gauge tables, tank inspection, calibration and more. 

Measurement
Petroleum measurement provides leadership in developing and maintaining cost effective, state of the art, hydrocarbon measurement standards relating to liquid measurement, measurement quality, gas fluids measurement, measurement accountability and evaporative loss estimation.

Refining
This section provides documents relating to inspection; pressure relieving systems; mechanical equipment; electrical installations; heat transfer equipment; materials engineering; motor control; piping components; pumps; valves; refinery waste; and more.

Transportation, Marketing, and Safety
This section provides standards covering transportation of line pipe, gasoline and petroleum marketing operations and safety programs and processes.

This section also includes security guidelines for the petroleum industry and data on petroleum industry occupational injuries.

API Select
API Select is a unique collection of API publications that includes the Manual of Petroleum Measurement Standards, specifications, recommended practices, bulletins and standards that are predominantly used within the petrochemical industry.

The following collections are not part of the API Complete Collection and are optional.

API Research Reports
The API Research Reports section contains active exploration and production research reports, relating to various petrochemical research projects sponsored by API. The product contains reports produced since the late 1970's.

API Individual Certification Programs (ICP®)
API offers individual certification programs for pressure vessel inspectors, process piping inspectors, aboveground storage tank inspectors, ultrasonic (UT) examiners, refractory personnel and tank entry supervisors. The programs are designed to improve industry health and safety, environmental performance, ensure compliance and self-regulation and strengthen management control and internal inspection capabilities.

API Mechanical Equipment Data Sheets
The API Mechanical Equipment Data Sheets collection includes active equipment data sheets in EXCEL 5.0 format. These industry standard API Data Sheets are utilized by chemical and refining companies to integrate “standard” equipment data sheets into their business workflow. API Mechanical Equipment Data Sheets are at the center of the design, engineering and procurement process for plant equipment.
