World Analysis - Paraxylene and Terephthalates

After a seven percent contraction in 2008, global demand for paraxylene (PX) rebounded and grew roughly by seven percent in 2009.  There was phenomenal growth in 2010 of nearly 11 percent, on the back of rebounding fiber markets primarily in Asia, which were themselves spurred on by a global shortage of cotton and the resultant historic high cotton prices.  The cotton shortage resulted in nearly one million metric tons of unexpected polyester demand (580,000 metric tons of PX equivalents) over a relatively short period.  This combined with nearly two million metric tons of PX growth associated with rebounding fiber and PET markets to strain PX supply.  The demand continued to increase into early 2011.

The primary supply issue in PX will be the ability of the industry to build new capacity at the pace of the global demand growth in downstream PTA and polyester capacity.  Increasingly, new PX capacity requires the addition of new reforming and aromatics capacity, which increases the total capital cost and the risk of investment.  This will likely keep the growth rate of capacity constrained.
