Geopressure Database
In some highly pressured regions more than 90 percent of unpredicted drilling downtown is due to overpressure. The IHS Geopressure Database is one of the most comprehensive, accessible and up-to-date geopressure databases in the world. It provides immediate and accurate subsurface data so you can make informed decisions and stay competitive.

The Pressure Database provides a standardized, reliable and easy-to-access digital reference of formation pressures from publicly released and proprietary offset wells in areas of high exploration prospectivity. The database includes formation pressures reinterpreted from WFT measurements (i.e RFT, MDT, etc.), DSTs and kicks, fracture pressures derived from formation integrity or leak-off tests, lost circulation events and mud pressures derived from drilling mud weights.
Standardization means that valid geological and engineering interpretations can be made, as any trend or anomaly in the pressure data is the result of subsurface conditions and not an artifact of poor data.
The IHS Formation Pressure database enables oil companies to calibrate predicted pore pressure from seismic, petrophysical, basin and mud weight modelling, which allows companies to develop safe drilling programs, determine reservoir connectivity and predict seal breaching.
Value Proposition
The purchase and analysis of released well data is the most cost-effective way for an oil company to obtain an unbiased detailed understanding of the subsurface geology of an explored area. The purchase of the IHS Pressure database will save 26 man-years of data sourcing, processing and expert re-interpretation. This equates to an investment of $1.87 million assuming a flat rate of $75K per year.
The pressure data has been reinterpreted by IHS in-house pressure experts and standardized allowing rapid comparison of well information. This ensures that apparent trends in data are the results of subsurface conditions, speeding up the decision-making capability and providing a competitive edge.
Key Differentiators
We generate what is widely regarded as the highest quality pressure database of UK, Irish, Norwegian and GoM wells available. IHS in-house experts add value by re-interpreting formation pressures from WFT logs, temperature-correcting pressure readings, standardizing pressure units and correcting depths for well deviation (converting to TVDSS).We have excellent coverage in our core North Sea areas for UK and Norway, while also covering Ireland, Australia, Denmark, US Gulf of Mexico and The Netherlands.
IHS is the sole Pressure Data provider for Ireland and UK wells.
Users of the database include:
- Technical Geologists
- New Ventures Geologists
- Drilling Engineers
- Geophysicists
- Geoscientists
- Strategic Management
- Consultants
