This IHS Jane's Online Intelligence Briefing will outline the claims being made by various littoral states, what actions they are taking to develop their military capabilities in the region and what the prospects are for a peaceful or confrontational resolution to the situation.
As climate change makes the Arctic region and its potentially massive hydrocarbon resources increasingly accessible, the Arctic littoral states (Canada, Denmark, Norway, Russia and the United States) are paying closer attention to the region. All five are pursuing overlapping territorial claims with the UN, while nascent co-operation forums seek to keep these disputes within the realms of diplomacy. Nevertheless, all of the littoral states are also developing their military capabilities to enable them to project their power into the Arctic region, setting the scene for potential confrontation in the future.
