Just one counterfeit part incident poses risks ranging from catastrophic brand damage to costly halts in production and unnecessary additional design and development. Counterfeit or sub-standard parts -- electronic or otherwise -- are a serious and growing threat. Some industry sources say that up to 10% of technology products worldwide are counterfeit, while the Bureau of Industry and Security of the US Department of Commerce has reported a rise in counterfeit incidents sequentially each of the past four years.
The economic recession is making things worse, with an unprecedented impact throughout the supply chain. The precipitous market decline drove weaker components suppliers out of business.
