New IHS PetraSeis and IHS GeoSyn Versions Now Available
By Owen PetersAs IHS works to further integrate geological and geophysical functionality into its products, it has released new versions of IHS PetraSeis® and IHS GeoSyn™.
PetraSeis 3.6.0
PetraSeis 3.6.0 offers several enhancements, including support for:
- Volume-based curvature computations (nine types)
- Similarity mapping
- Spectral decomposition
- 3-D isopach computations
- 3-D seed interpolation
These enhancements are designed to help speed workflows and increase usability. For example, the new 3-D spectral decomposition tool breaks down a volume of seismic data into its component frequencies and displays the relative strength of the different frequencies on a map. This technique helps users analyze bed thickness and tuning effects associated with channels and bars, where higher frequencies image thinner beds and lower frequencies image thicker beds. PetraSeis stores each frequency as a discrete horizon, with the strength of the relevant frequency as the horizon’s amplitude.

In addition, PetraSeis now can perform similarity mapping on any attribute displayed on the trace view (such as instantaneous amplitude or cosine of phase) relative to a 3-D volume with the same processing parameters. Since the similarity mapping tool uses a single trace, it provides higher spatial resolution and better preserves sharp edges when compared to methods that use 2-D spatial moving windows.

GeoSyn 6.4.1.3
The latest version of GeoSyn offers log cross-over highlighting functionality that is now available from the multi-log-per-track dialog box. With added drag-and-drop functionality for LAS-format files, the tool lets users save and reuse their own formulas in the math dialog box and derived log areas. It also provides a log inspection tool in the main display and lets users designate their own curve types as “active” so that they can be used in equations.
With the new color infill for log cross-over and cut offs as well as the new tip style inspection tool, the GeoSyn main display just got a lot more powerful.
