American Bureau of Shipping (ABS)

ABS publishes standards for the design, construction and operational maintenance of marine-related facilities.

  • Since 1862, the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has published technical standards for the design, construction and operational maintenance of ships and other marine structures. IHS offers more than 560 ABS standards in its collection.

    ABS serves as a Recognized Organization for creating marine standards for more than 100 governments.

    Who Uses ABS standards:

    • Ship owners and operators
    • Naval architects, marine engineers and associated disciplines
    • Offshore oil designers, builders and maintenance personnel

    ABS standards apply to the building and classing of marine vessels such as:

    • Offshore mobile drilling units
    • Concrete vessels
    • Research ships
    • Mining ships
