  • IHS Energy Consulting Case Studies

Case Study #1 (Upstream): Reducing Operating Costs for a Mature Oil Field

Situation: A client with a mature offshore oil field producing assets needed help reducing operating costs.
Approach: A joint IHS-client team worked over 16 weeks to review, analyze and model operating costs using Activity-Based Costing (ABC).
Outcome: The client gained US$60 million in savings.

Case Study #2 (Midstream): Global Growth Strategy

Situation: An aggressive coalbed methane (CBM) producer needed a strategy to increase shareholder value in the face of a limited market for its growing reserves and production.
Approach: IHS Consulting worked with senior management to present to the Board of Directors a wide range of growth alternatives--some that significantly challenged the current business model--and the key value drivers behind them.
Outcome: The company tripled its share price within two years after the Board's adopted the proposed two-phased strategy to develop liquefied natural gas (LNG) for local sales and expand into CBM in other countries.

Case Study #3 (Downstream): Eastern Europe Refining Business

Situation: A large independent European refining firm needed help with a legal dispute over the value of a refiner it had sold a few years previously.
Approach: IHS Consulting assessed the value of this refinery using multiple methods to point out the weakness in opposing party's valuation.
Outcome: The refinery market analysis provided compelling support for our client’s position, leading the opposition to drop the argument from its petition; our client eventually succeeded in winning the case.

Case Study #4: (Natural Resource Owners):
    Hydrocarbon Sector Benchmark Analysis

Situation: With over 120 countries competing for E&P opportunities in its country, the Greenland Bureau of Minerals and Petroleum needed assistance setting up fiscal terms that would attract foreign investment but capture maximum receipts for the state.
Approach: IHS Consulting employed a variety of methodologies to determine the top eight competitor countries and compared their fiscal terms using defined criteria to those of Greenland.
Outcome: As a result of the international benchmarking analysis, IHS Consulting recommended fiscal terms for Greenland’s government that guaranteed the maximum government take achievable while providing investors attractive and competitive returns.
