Unsaturated Polyesters

This supplement to Process Economics Program Report 26, issued in July 1967, reviews the commercial and technical developments in unsaturated polyester resins that occurred between mid-1967 and early 1976. It presents the process economics of producing a general purpose unsaturated polyester resin by a batch fusion process and a batch solvent process, each using glycol; a batch process and a continuous process, each using propylene oxide; and a continuous process using glycol. The industry status is updated and the recent developments in the formulation and preparation of low shrink/low profile resins, water-extended resins, flame- retardant resins, heat-resistant resins, and viscosity controls for unsaturated polyester resins are reviewed.
