PEP Review 85-3-1
Tetramethylene Diamine for Nylon 4,6
DSM has commercialized nylon 4,6,trademark Stanyl. Nylon 4,6 has properties superior to those of nylon 6,6 and nylon 6, which, according to DSM, will allow this new nylon to compete as a low-cost engineering plastic.
This review presents SRI's technoeconomic evaluation of a 20 million lb/yr (9,100 metric tons/yr) TMDA plant. The diamine is for use in the production of 44 million lb/yr (20,000 metric tons/yr) nylon 4,6. At this production rate, the product value of TMDA would be more than the estimated product value of nylon 6,6 at 44 million lb/yr. The product value of nylon 4,6 is, however, comparable with the product values of other low-cost engineering plastics, such as polybutylene terephthalate, polycarbonate, polyphenylene oxide, and polyphenylene sulfide.
