Terephthalic Acid (Medium Purity) from p-Xylene

The route to medium purity terephthalic acid (BP-TPA) and the conventional route to high purity TPA (HP-TPA) have been re-evaluated on the basis of recent patents to Matsuyama for BP-TPA and Standard Oil Company (Indiana) for HP-TPA. Improvements were obtained in the economics of both processes, but the BP-TPA route appears to have a competitive edge, provided that a satisfactory and consistent product quality can be attained.
