A recent patent assigned to Monsanto covers a new process for styrene production. Toluene is converted to stilbene, which is then reacted with ethylene to make styrene. A preliminary process design and an economic study on the process are given in this review. Costs are compared with those of making styrene by the conventional route from ethylene and benzene via ethylbenzene.
