Oxidation of ethylbenzene in the presence of acetic anhydride, with the subsequent pyrolysis of the acetates formed, yields phenol and vinyl acetate as final products. Such a process has been patented by Suntech. Our evaluation shows that this process is not economic and is not likely to become so.
