Methyl tertiary-butyl ether is being produced in Europe as a high-octane blending agent for use in motor gasoline. It can be produced by the catalytic reaction of isobutylene and methanol. This review presents an approximate design and cost study on making 104 million lb/yr (47,200 metric tons/yr, or 1,100 bbl/day) of the ether from the butenes by-product fraction of a large naphtha cracking ethylene plant. Economic and quality factors involved in using the ether in gasoline are discussed briefly.
