Asahi Glass Co. has recently announced a new process for the production of methyl methacrylate from isobutylene. A preliminary process design and economics for the process are presented in this review. An economic comparison between the acetone cyanohydrin process and the isobutylene oxidation process indicates that the isobutylene oxidation process has a marginal advantage with respect to total fixed capital. The isobutylene oxidation process has a ~10% advantage in product sales value.
