The Chevron Research Company has developed a vanadium/phosphorus catalyst that gives a yield of 62 mol% of maleic anhydride (MA) on butane at a space velocity of 1,000 hr-1. On the basis of preliminary information, it would appear that this catalyst is competitive with the recently developed Chemsystems catalyst for converting butane to MA. (The use of the latter catalyst was evaluated in Process Economics Program Report 46A1, issued in 1973).
