A process developed by Lurgi for making styrene from ethylbenzene by isothermal dehydrogenation is evaluated and compared with the conventional adiabatic dehydrogenation process. If it is assumed that the same conversion and selectivity can be attained by using the proper catalyst, the isothermal process has a moderate economical advantage over the adiabatic process, primarily because of savings on utilities.
