Caustic soda produced in diaphragm cells is contaminated with sodium chloride . Replacing the diaphragm with an ion-exchange membrane eliminates this problem. SRI's evaluation shows that the difference between the operating costs of the diaphragm and membrane cells is within the accuracy of our estimating methods, and so is the difference in the investments . SRI believes that the membrane cell technology will be widely adopted throughout the chlorine-alkali industry
