There are a number of possible process routes for the manufacture of hydroquinone (p-dihydroxybenzene). This review discusses the chemistry of four potential routes, and provides rough estimates of economics. The four routes presented are:
- Dihydrobenzenes from phenol and hydrogen peroxide
- Hydorquinone from p-isopropenylphenol and hydrogen peroxide
- Hydroquinone from p-nitrosophenol
- Hyudroquinone from nitrobenzene
