Union Carbide has developed a process for the catalytic oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane to ethylene. The process, called Ethoxene, also produces a substantial amount of acetic acid.
SRI's preliminary economic assessment indicates that the Ethoxene process requires a greater capital investment than does steam cracking of ethane to ethylene. The credit for the acetic acid by-product, however, makes Ethoxene the lower cost process for ethylene.
