At the time of writing, the chemical and petroleum industries were faced with tightening regulations intended to preserve or restore environmental quality. Many complaints have been voiced about the "moving target" aspect of the regulations, and only recently have the form and substance of the regulations appeared to approach finality. The purpose of this review is not to examine the justification for the regulations, but rather to identify and discuss the pollution control problems. Finally, the important U.S. laws will be reviewed and the regulations tabulated.
