A projection of the process energy and feedstock energy demand by the U.S. industrial chemicals industry to the year 2000 indicates that (1) the amount of energy required by this industry will expand from 5.7% of the total U.S. energy demand in 1971 to 11.5% in 2000 and (2) future energy consumption in the chemical industry is expected to be moderated by a slowing of the growth of chemicals, by energy conservation programs, and by technological changes.
