Anthraquinone from Toluene

SRI Consulting has evaluated a process for making anthraquinone from toluene on the basis of a Mitsui Toatsu Chemicals, Inc. patent. The economics are unfavorable compared with those of the naphthalene/butadiene-based route and those of the conventional anthracene-based route, at this time. However, because of the simplicity of the process and the cheaper raw material, this process will become attractive if the conversion of toluene can be improved.
