Process Economics Program Report 131
Methyl Tertiary-Butyl Ether and Tertiary-Butyl Alcohol (TBA)
Published: August 1979
This report deals with the manufacture of methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE) and tertiary-butyl alcohol (TBA) from isobutylene contained in cracked C4 hydrocarbon mixtures.
Both MTBE and TBA are of current interest as high-octane blending agents for use in motor gasoline. Limitation or elimination of lead and other additives in gasoline has created the need for other means of obtaining a satisfactory octane rating.
Processes and economics of MTBE and TBA synthesis from isobutylene-containing streams are discussed.
