The tight global phenol market of 2010, turned out to be ‘long’ through a combination of factors. Weak phenol demand growth through 2012 has coincided with new capacity coming on-stream in Northeast Asia and demand should return to growth in most regions as further new plants will be added. On the back of the changing phenol supply/demand situation, acetone moved from being perpetually ‘long’ to being relatively ‘short’ through 2012. Acetone supply contraction was driven by lower phenol demand while acetone demand did not fall as fast, and led to acetone prices rising above propylene for periods this year. This has now corrected, but as with phenol, there is considerable new acetone capacity coming on-stream in Asia which has historically been an acetone importing region. The questions are whether global trade flows will shift in light of the new Asian capacity and will anyone else invest into this increasingly oversupplied product chain.
IHS Chemical World Analysis - Cumene, Phenol & Acetone examines historical trends and long term projections for supply/demand, production, capacity, and trade of the global cumene, phenol & acetone industry over a 16-year period (five-year history, base year, ten-year forecast).
Included with the IHS Chemical World Analysis - Cumene, Phenol & Acetone is 12-month’s access to IHS Chemical’s online capacity and supply/demand databases, with updates to the capacity database as they occur and one update to the supply/demand database. The study’s conclusions, with text and graphs, are provided online; as are the Excel files for the supply/demand flat file and the regional supply/demand graphs.
