    • First Steps Toward a New Balance: Following a historic recession, collapsing gas demand, and severe oversupply in European natural gas markets, the first tentative steps toward balance are evident in 2010. IHS CERA does not expect a rapid move back to a tighter gas market, and the gap between oil-linked contract prices and liquefied natural gas–influenced spot prices will persist through 2010. But for now mere stabilization will represent a major shift after the turmoil of 2009. This report investigates the key drivers behind rebalancing.
    • Bursting the Bubble: The Impact of Contract Renegotiations on the European Gas Market. Reports of renegotiated price formulas in long-term contracts for European gas supply have attracted considerable attention. This report focuses on the sustainability of oil indexation, and specifically whether the introduction of spot price elements to long-term contract formulas represents the first step toward full-fledged spot pricing in Continental Europe.
    • The First Fissures: How Will the European Energy Industry Respond to a Global Downturn? The uncertainties caused by the recent financial turbulence have now resolved into the clear acknowledgment that Europe and the rest of the world are in recession. Companies with solid balance sheets have a clear competitive advantage over their smaller competitors, which could bring further consolidation of the industry. Growing government involvement in the marketplace may lead to tension with industry as the implications for corporate decision making become apparent. The impact on the European energy industry is likely to be broad and multifaceted.
    • Shaping the Future: European Gas Storage and the Growing Demand for Flexibility. Investments to bring large volumes of new natural gas supply to Europe currently dominate industry focus. However, as gas demand grows and as flexible indigenous production is replaced by base-load imports, there is an additional requirement for flexibility to provide seasonal shape to meet consumption requirements. As a result, there are already significant investment plans to increase storage capacity. Depending on the flexibility of the new gas supplies, however, these planned projects could exceed the need for them.
    • Europe's Gas Hubs Show Slow but Steady Development. A number of initiatives to drive liquidity in the spot gas markets of Europe have occurred over the past year. In Germany zone mergers and changes to balancing rules were designed to make it easier for market participants to buy, sell, and transport gas around the country. France also instituted its own mergers between zones. At the time these initiatives were not expected to have an overnight impact. In this review of how liquidity has evolved over the past year, we follow developments in the main European Gas traded markets, providing participants with a summary of how volumes are evolving and key regulatory or market changes that may influence hub development.
