CSI MasterFormat is the most widely used system for organizing construction project manuals in North America. MasterFormat's system of organizing construction information into procurement and contracting requirements, as well as technical divisions of activities and work practices, is applied in every information resource used in design and construction. It creates a framework of the master list of numbers and titles classified by work results or construction practices, allowing users to organize project manuals, detailed cost information, and relate drawing annotations to specifications.
Nearly all CSI approved sections also include performance and safety requirements generated by agencies such as the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA), and numerous other federal and professional organizations.
