Lawrence J. Makovich, IHS CERA Vice President and Senior Advisor for Global Power, directs IHS CERA research efforts in the power sector as part of the Office of the Chairman. Dr. Makovich is highly respected authority on electricity markets, regulation, economics, and strategy and has testified before the US Congress on electric power policy.
Dr. Makovich advises senior management, Boards of Directors and government leaders regarding the alighnemt of strategy to the trends in consumer preferences, industry regulations, market conditions as well as production technologies, costs and environmental impacts.
His latest research involves quantifying the value of generation portfolio diversity, financial risk management, power demand drivers and the potential for smart grid technologies. He has also recently provided a technique to recalibrate power cost assessments to take renewable integration costs into account and estimate the implicit cost of greenhouse gas emission abatement.

Sara Johnson is Senior Research Director of Global Economics with IHS Global Insight. In this role, she helps clients assess worldwide business and financial opportunities and risks. Ms. Johnson co-authors the Global Executive Summary, manages the Executive Strategy Council and presents the IHS economic outlook to international conferences. She was previously North American Research Director and Chief Regional Economist with Standard & Poor’s DRI, a predecessor of IHS Global Insight.
Ms. Johnson holds a BA in economics and mathematics from Wellesley College and an MA in economics from Harvard University with concentrations in finance and macroeconomic theory.
Ms. Johnson is a director of the NABE Foundation and a former director of the National Association for Business Economics. She is a member of The Boston Economic Club and American Economic Association.

James Diffley, Vice President and Chief Economist for the IHS Global Insight US Regional Services Group, has overall responsibility for US Regional Services, including the Regional Core Macroeconomic Service and the IHS Global Insight Real Estate and Construction Service.
Since 1998, Mr. Diffley has supervised the quarterly economic forecast of the 50 states and over 300 metropolitan areas of the United States. He regularly makes presentations of these regional economic forecasts and analysis to clients, conferences, governmental bodies and the press. Mr. Diffley is also responsible for customized consulting projects. These have included long-term projections of cigarette consumption, forecasts of capital gains realizations, analysis of the economic impact of the securities industry on New York State, analysis of the impact of changing oil prices on local economies and the economic impact of various facilities locations.
Mr. Diffley came to IHS Global Insight through WEFA, Inc. Prior to joining WEFA, Mr. Diffley was supervising tax analyst with the New Jersey Division of Taxation's Office of Tax Analysis from 1988 to 1996, where he was responsible for developing the state economic forecast for the state executive budget and for business tax revenue forecasting. From 1982 to 1987, he was on the economics faculty at Adelphi University in New York.
