Cream of the Crop

The North American energy industry is undergoing major changes in type, location and cost of supply. Gas could be the fuel of the future. It is both more efficient and more climate friendly than other fossil fuel alternatives, but with the ramp-up capability and dependability absent from renewable resources.

It is also abundant, with several analyses of the US gas resource base showing potential increases of 500 10 more than 1000 TCF. Much of this gas resource growth is the result of a revolution in unlocking production from unconventional gas resource plays.

  • Cream of the Crop features a multiclient study completed in February 2010 that assessed unconventional gas plays in North America. Through the application of comprehensive, detailed production and well histories, IHS analysts measured the potential for shale, tight gas sandstone and coalbed methane in the United States and Canada. This study evaluated the performance of the top 30 gas resource plays in North America and their 20 subplays.

    Cream of the Crop primarily aims to help clients assess which plays represent the best investments for their organization and develop entry and operating strategies based on a deep understanding of play-level economics and other factors driving commercial and technical success.       VP, Energy Research

      Bob Fryklund is VP of Energy Research and is an expert in Global Upstream issues. He applies his strong E&P background to strategic problem solving in key areas such as Upstream portfolio balancing, M&A and access strategies and company valuations.

      Mr. Fryklund joined IHS in 2006, after serving as Libya president and Brazil country manager for ConocoPhillips. He brings more than 32 years of experience in the upstream oil and gas industry as an explorer and as executive manager. He has also held senior management positions in upstream with British Borneo, Union Texas and Hess.

      Mr. Fryklund is an expert in exploration, opportunity assessment, acquisition, strategic planning and portfolio management. He has been involved in two of the largest oil and gas discoveries in the last 20 years and is well known for his insights around all four pillars of supply — unconventional resources, field growth, exploration and acquisitions. He has also provided technical and strategic advice on two of the top deals in Latin America and the World in the last two years.

      He is a recognized industry thought-leader and frequent keynote speaker/moderator at energy industry conferences and associations, including the World Economic Forum, IHS CERA Week, AAPG, SPE, IEA,OTC, AIPN and NAPE. He serves on the advisory board of IPAA and the AAPG-TAC committee and previously served on boards such as the IBP (a Brazilian oil and gas association), the Libyan-U.S. Council (a bilateral trade association), the SPE-Libya and the American School of Tripoli. Bob has also written numerous articles in several languages and regularly contributes to leading industry publications.

      A geologist, Fryklund holds an AB from Hamilton College and an advanced certificate in management. He has also completed advanced studies in business and geology from the University of Houston and the University of Tulsa, respectively. Bob is a member of the Houston Geological Society (HGS) and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG).

      Robert Ineson, IHS CERA Senior Director, leads the IHS CERA North American Natural Gas and Global LNG research activities. Mr. Ineson specializes in analysis of North American gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) markets, natural gas pricing and transmission, and corporate strategy. Mr. Ineson is a coauthor, with IHS CERA Chairman Daniel Yergin, of The Wall Street Journal op-ed piece "America’s Natural Gas Revolution." Mr. Ineson is a coauthor of the IHS CERA Multiclient Studies Fueling North America’s Energy Future and Rising to the Challenge: Turning North America’s Unconventional Potential into Reality—A Supply Study to 2018. His past work includes the IHS CERA Multiclient Studies Diminishing Returns: The Cost of North American Gas Supply in an Unconventional Era; New Realities, New Risks: North American Gas and Power Scenarios Through 2020; and The Alchemist’s Challenge: Turning the Southern Cone’s Natural Gas into Gold.  His recent research focuses on the unconventional natural gas revolution and on the evolution of global LNG markets.

      Before joining IHS CERA, Mr. Ineson was Director of Market Forecasting at Coral Energy. He previously held analytical positions with Texas Eastern, KN Energy, and Tenneco Energy and as Principal of the gas consulting practice at Resource Data International (RDI). He is the author of RDI’s Convergence of Gas and Power and articles on gas transportation modeling, deregulation, and the North American gas market.

      Mr. Ineson holds a BA from the State University of New York at Albany and an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School.
