Thane Gustafson
, Senior Director, Eurasian Energy and Policy
Thane Gustafson, Senior Director of Russian and Caspian Energy for IHS CERA, is a widely recognized authority on Eurasia who has spent 40 years studying and traveling in Russia, Ukraine and the rest of the Former Soviet Union (FSU). Gustafson founded the IHS CERA Russian and Caspian team in 1990 and directed it for 15 years. He is the author of over 200 IHS CERA reports.
Formerly a professor at Harvard University and a political analyst at the Rand Corporation, Thane Gustafson is also professor of government at Georgetown University. Dr. Gustafson’s latest book—his fifth— is Wheel of Fortune: the Battle for Oil and Power in Russia (Harvard University Press, October 2012).
Dr. Gustafson’s research at IHS focuses on Russian oil and gas, including analyses of Russian oilfield technology and practice; gas production and transportation issues; oil production and domestic and foreign oil markets; US-Russian political and energy relations; regulatory and legal reform in the Russian energy sector; and the evolution of the Russian oil and gas companies.
Dr. Gustafson holds a BS from the University of Illinois in political science and chemistry and a PhD from Harvard University.
