Defence spending has been on a strong upward trajectory across South America; a consequence of renewed economic vigour and national ambitions. Reindustrialisation has been apparent with strong state support (ranging from focused offset demands; indigenous procurement targets; greater state R&D expenditure; tax incentives; and government-to-government cross-border co-operation agreements). Core aspirations are greater self-sufficiency and defence and security exports as a means towards economic diversification.

Guy Anderson, Chief Analyst for IHS Jane's Defense Industry Markets, heads the IHS Jane’s Emerging Markets intelligence service and the IHS Jane’s Defence Industry News information service and is responsible for authoring the biannual Jane’s World Defence Industry reference book. He is also business editor of the iconic IHS Jane’s Defence Weekly.
A frequent commentator on defense industrial matters in national and international media, Anderson is also a research fellow of the UK Defence Forum; a contributor to both the London Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) and the Moscow Centre for the Analysis of Strategies and Technologies (CAST); and a member of the defense export strategy board of UK defense and aerospace industry group, ADS.
Prior to joining IHS Jane’s almost a decade ago, Anderson was an award-winning financial journalist. He has written for a series of regional and national publications including the UK Daily Mail. He remains a member of the UK Chartered Institute of Journalists.
Anderson read politics and law at the University of Teesside (UK) before pursuing post-graduate studies in journalism.
Matthew Smith is an independent defence consultant specializing in market and competitive intelligence. He is the Emerging Markets Consultant for Jane's Navigating the Emerging Markets report series and provides outsourced analysis services for clients in the aerospace and defence sector through Defence Insight. Prior to his independent consultancy Matthew spent 7 years providing open source market and competitive intelligence to the defence industry with three years as a strategist with BAE Systems following four as an analyst and editor with Jane's Information Group. Matthew is also a contributor to Shephard Group and has provided his insights to national and international media. He has a degree in Politics and International Relations from the University of Aberdeen and a Masters of Research in War Studies from King College London.
