By engaging in scenario modelling, IHS Jane’s examines the logistic challenges of a possible Israeli strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities, and considers whether Israel is capable of infiltrating Iran’s defences to curb the country’s nuclear programme.
International concern over the nature of Iran’s nuclear activities is running at an all-time high following the revelation of possible weapons-related activity and the imposition of new sanctions against Iran in late 2011 and early 2012.
Escalating rhetoric in recent weeks from both Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu suggests that the prospect of military action over Iran’s nuclear programme remains a possibility. In January, Netanyahu reaffirmed Israel’s retention of a military option against Iran should diplomacy and economic sanctions fail to resolve the nuclear crisis. This was followed by Ahmadinejad’s announcement in early February of a substantial increase to Iran's defence budget.
