Justin Pettit, Vice President of Strategic Advisory and Transaction Support for IHS Consulting, advises financial sponsors, sovereign wealth funds, corporate boards and senior executives on corporate and portfolio strategy, valuation, M&A and major capital decisions. He is also an expert in JVs, financial strategy and capital market issues, strategic risk management, economic performance measurement and management and strategic transformation.
Mr. Pettit’s advisory career has focused at the intersection of corporate strategy and corporate finance for a wide range of clients around the world. Originally a process technology and development engineer in the auto industry, he moved to corporate development with Norcen Energy Resources after his MBA.
Mr. Pettit is the author of two books, Merge Ahead: Mastering the Five Enduring Trends of Artful M&A (McGraw-Hill 2009), and Strategic Corporate Finance: Applications in Valuation & Capital Structure (Wiley 2007). He is a contributing editor for the journal, Strategy + Business, has been published in over a dozen business journals, including Harvard Business Review and Morgan Stanley’s Journal of Applied Corporate Finance. He is also a referee for The Journal of Quantitative Finance and The Journal of Pension Economics and Finance.
A popular guest lecturer at business schools and public conferences such as the Brookings Institute, Financial Management Association and Finance Executives Institute, Mr. Pettit leads topics in strategy, valuation, capital markets, risk management and financial policy.
Jim Thomas, Vice President of IHS Consulting (Upstream, Oil & Gas), brings 20 years of upstream oil and gas experience and also leads our regulatory practice.
Before joining IHS in 1999, Jim was a senior consultant with Petroconsultants, an environmental manager with Atkins Environment with secondment on a part-time basis to the UK Environment Agency. Prior to this, he was a technical geochemical analyst with BP. Jim holds a B.Sc. degree in Geology from the University of Leeds and a Ph.D in Organic Geochemistry from the University of Bristol. He is a Fellow of the Geological Society.
John King leads our Asia Chemicals practice from Thailand. He was previously with Nexant and Chem Systems, where he covered the region for 15 years. John has directed and managed numerous client engagements in areas such as corporate and business strategy, major investment decision support (including project financing and M&A) and in technology, market and business evaluations. John has an MBA in Strategy from the London Business School and a BS in Chemical Engineering (Magna Cum Laude) from the University of Missouri.

Jürgen Sorgenfrei has over 20 years experience in global trade, shipping, port and hinterland operations, including port planning and development, transportation marketing and regional economics.
Prior to joining IHS, he served as chairman, sales and marketing for the Port of Hamburg, headquartered in Germany but with an additional 13 offices in Europe, Asia and the US. Mr. Sorgenfrei received his diploma in Economics from Christian-Albrechts-University in Kiel, Germany and wrote his dissertation at the University of Hamburg's Institute for Traffic Science. He is regular lecturer at different universities.
Roberto joined Purvin & Gertz (now part of IHS) in 2000 and has been a partner since 2003. Since then, he has worked on a wide range of projects, including refinery feasibility studies, mergers & acquisitions, project & corporate finance, crude oil disposition & pricing, oil logistics, and various market studies. Roberto joined IHS from M.W. Kellogg, where his main areas of activity were process design and refinery feasibility studies, including the Bonny Island Nigeria LNG project. Roberto has a degree in chemical engineering from the University of Pisa, Italy. After graduating, he joined Agip Petroli, the downstream part of ENI, as a process engineer in the technology group at the Livorno refinery.
