  • Cold War The Race for Arctic Resources - Feb 23, 2012

Cold War: The Race for Arctic Resources

IHS Jane's Online Intelligence Briefings

IHS Jane's Online Intelligence Briefing is presenting the Cold War: The Race for Arctic Resources webinar on February 23, 2012.

This IHS Jane's Online Intelligence Briefing will outline the claims being made by various littoral states, what actions they are taking to develop their military capabilities in the region and what the prospects are for a peaceful or confrontational resolution to the situation.

As climate change makes the Arctic region and its potentially massive hydrocarbon resources increasingly accessible, the Arctic littoral states (Canada, Denmark, Norway, Russia and the United States) are paying closer attention to the region. All five are pursuing overlapping territorial claims with the UN, while nascent co-operation forums seek to keep these disputes within the realms of diplomacy. Nevertheless, all of the littoral states are also developing their military capabilities to enable them to project their power into the Arctic region, setting the scene for potential confrontation in the future.

For more details about the content of this 60 minute intelligence briefing, please see the agenda below.

IHS Jane’s Intelligence Briefings are available to Jane's Intelligence Centre, Jane's Intelligence Centre Module and Jane's DS Forecast clients/subscribers for free as part of their product subscription package – please speak to your local IHS Jane’s representative for more details or Register via the IHS Jane’s Client Area (login required).

This webinar will outline the various claims being made by the littoral states, what actions they are taking to develop their military capabilities in the region and what the prospects are for a peaceful or confrontational resolution to the situation. It will also cover:

        • The Arctic region is believed to hold potentially vast hydrocarbon and mineral reserves, much of which may be located beyond the existing territorial waters of the five littoral states.
        • The five Arctic states are all seeking to extend their territorial waters into the Arctic region in a series of competing and overlapping claims. These claims are submitted to the UN.
        • The states making the competing claims have all committed themselves to finding a peaceful, diplomatic solution to the competing territorial claims.
        • Nevertheless, all five littoral states are undertaken measures to increase their military capabilities in the Arctic region, with Russia taking the lead closely followed by Canada. These capabilities are designed to ensure each state can project its military power into the region should it become necessary.
        • Although the prospects of war in the Arctic are slim, the increasing militarisation of the region and likelihood that the UN arbitration process will leave certain states disappointed, there remains the potential for greater confrontation in the region in th
