  • IHS CERA European Gas Roundtable in Amsterdam - December 2011

IHS CERA European Gas Roundtable

IHS CERA Fall 2011 Member Events

IHS CERA is hosting the European Gas Roundtable in Amsterdam, Netherlands on December 7, 2011.

As seesawing European gas demand shows no sign of stabilizing, the Roundtable will focus on what changes may be wrought by another year of low demand and traded prices at a discount to long-term contracts. The presentation will review the outlook for supply, demand and price across Europe. We will discuss the weak demand seen during 2011, the outlook for 2012 and the implications for hub liquidity, long-term contract pricing and infrastructure development. There will also be discussion of the long-term outlook (to 2035) for demand, supply and infrastructure, including gas storage.

The IHS CERA team will lead an interactive discussion on the following issues:

  • Weak demand, but no return to oversupply? Although demand in 2011 has tracked the levels seen in the depth of the downturn in 2009, traded prices have remained in a narrow band set by coal-to-gas switching and long-term contract prices. IHS CERA will discuss the reasons behind this price strength and consider the impact of a further economic downturn.
  • What will fill Europe’s future supply gap? The over 20 percent decline seen in UKCS production is a reminder that Europe’s demand for imports will grow in the coming decade, but where will this gas come from? The completion of the first string of Nordstream in fourth quarter 2011 will allow direct exports from Russia to Northwest Europe, but with other sources of supply looking to capture a share of the market, could a new battle for market share emerge?
  • What will Europe’s future gas market look like? The development of framework guidelines and the gas target model continues apace, with much discussion of bundled capacity, market coupling and the gas target model. IHS CERA will consider the impact of these developments on the gas market.
