What is a Zombie Ship?

The term ‘zombie’ ship is applied to vessels over 40 years old where no classification or ownership details can be ascertained.

Additionally, we ensure that within the previous 5 years no relevant annotations have been made against the ship record that could remotely indicate that this vessel continues to be in the world fleet. A recent audit undertaken identified that the majority of zombie ships were General Cargo and Bulk Carriers in the region of 10-600,000 dwt under the CHR flag.
