Case Study #1: Regional Economic Development and Prosperity

Challenge: A region's economy is challenged by foreign competition, market shifts for many of its traditional products and fast changing technology. It needs a focused, actionable economic development plan.

Solution: IHS led a multi-phase economic development program that analyzed its client's economy, created a strategy, and identified action initiatives to address the region's economic challenges. The program had the following components:

Regional Profile . The situational analysis began with an economic profile of the region, including a detailed forecast at the industry level.

Industry Analysis . Our consultants identified the full range of industry clusters which in turn were segmented into four broad categories: stars, challenges, mature, and opportunities.

Foundations and Barriers . Cluster foundations were analyzed and impediments to further economic development were identified. Global trading opportunities for the industry clusters were also discussed.

Community Involvement. A telephone and Internet survey was conducted to gather opinions about the state's economic prospects and economic development structure and strategy.

Comparison to Other Regions . A thorough assessment of the economic development strategy employed in the recent past was constructed.

Recommendations . The study concluded with recommendations for a path forward towards a more effective strategy.

The IHS Economic Development Approach: From Analysis to Strategy

Results: A broad-based public-private dialogue for economic development called The Prosperity Partnership was formalized by the IHS Team that remains in place today -- more than two years after inception.

More than 150 stakeholders participated in this project and more than 1,100 leaders from various public and private organizations participated in an array of activities to launch and sustain implementation action in key clusters

This project has enjoyed high visibility and has recently been positively acknowledged by the Governor and leaders of some of the largest firms in the region as "showing the way to a vibrant economic future."
