  • About
    ERAI
  • Just one counterfeit part incident poses risks ranging from catastrophic brand damage to costly halts in production and unnecessary additional design and development. Counterfeit or sub-standard parts -- electronic or otherwise -- are a serious and growing threat. Some industry sources say that up to 10% of technology products worldwide are counterfeit, while the Bureau of Industry and Security of the US Department of Commerce has reported a rise in counterfeit incidents sequentially each of the past four years.

The economic recession is making things worse, with an unprecedented impact throughout the supply chain. The precipitous market decline drove weaker components suppliers out of business. These economic swings, combined with regulatory transitions such as EU ROHS or EU REACH, have led to facility closures, capacity issues and discontinued or EOL parts. Shortages led to price and lead-time increases. Counterfeiters prey upon companies desperate for an obsolete part or facing a constrained supply. Many companies have entire bills of materials with hundreds or thousands of potential design costs, supply chain risks or supplier failures waiting to be discovered.

        Abstract

Counterfeit and inferior components are a real and present threat to the supply chain. This threat is not new, of course, but recent studies suggest that the threat is growing. For example, a recent survey by the Bureau of Industry and Security of the US Department of Commerce showed the incidence of counterfeits increasing steadily over the past three years. Recent mainstream media coverage has highlighted the risks to product performance, operations and regulatory compliance from inferior components and fakes in high-reliability markets like the military and medical devices.
