UK Network Rail Standards

With the exception of Guidance Notes, all Network Rail Standards are mandatory.

All new and replaced Network Rail standards are classified as Level 1, Level 2 or Level 3. These three levels – standard number format NR/L1/, NR/L2/, NR/L3/ - define the type of information that is found in each standard. This information - when used and implemented correctly - is essential to achieving consistent, efficient and safe systems of work operation across Network Rail’s infrastructure.

Some current standards also exist in number formats not using the three levels definition but use the format “RT/.” As these are amended or replaced, the new numbering system is implemented.
