Water supply is in a silent crisis. Freshwater accounts for only one-half of one percent of all the earth’s water, but in comparison to the energy crisis, few realize the rate at which this vital resource is disappearing. More than 100 cities and suburban areas around the world have inadequate water supplies. For example, each Beijing resident can access only 10,500 cubic feet of water per day. The world average is 35,300 cubic feet per day. Additionally, 300 million rural Chinese lack clean drinking water because of polluted waterways—over half of China's major rivers and lakes, and 35% of groundwater supplies are undrinkable.
