Corporate Sustainability at IHS

At IHS, Corporate Sustainability is about being thoughtful and responsible citizens to improve the quality of life for our customers, colleagues, shareowners and the communities in which we live and work.

  • Corporate Sustainability at IHS

At IHS, Corporate Sustainability is core to the way we do business and is a critical aspect of our values and our culture. By working together and by incorporating the idea of sustainability into every decision that we make, IHS can gain competitive advantage through sustainability.

Our definition of Corporate Sustainability is:

"We act with care in all that we do to ensure we make decisions that:

    1. Support the long-term profitability of our company,
    2. Have positive environmental impacts,
    3. Strengthen our communities,
    4. Serve the best interests of all IHS colleagues and stakeholders."

    Jerre Stead

“My vision is for Corporate Sustainability to become ever more embedded into our culture and that we are recognized as a leader in Corporate Sustainability by 2015.”
    - Jerre Stead

As we launch our formal effort, our ultimate goal is to increase our competitiveness as a company, while simultaneously improving both the societal and economic conditions of the communities in which we operate. As we continue to focus on driving long-term, sustainable and profitable growth, our communities must also be successful so that they can continue to generate demand for our products - a mutually beneficial relationship.

The framework for Corporate Sustainability at IHS is built upon three main pillars: Environment, Community and Philanthropy . We welcome you to explore our site to learn what we are doing.

In 2011, our Sustainability focus will be on measuring our results to understand our starting point, and to then set future goals. To do this, we are using one of our own products - the IHS Corporate Responsibility Solution, a sustainability tracking and reporting tool. Global implementation of this enterprise-wide tool will help us understand our starting point and will allow us to analyze where our efforts can have the greatest impact. We will also have the ability to track our progress and report and analyze our results.

To recognize our colleagues, and to further leverage the many great ideas and actions taking place around the company, we have an internal recognition program: the IHS Sustainability Award. This is a quarterly award program designed to recognize the commitment and participation of IHS colleagues who are taking action and contributing to improving our footprint and Corporate Sustainability progress. Winners are awarded carbon offsets, which are purchased through The CarbonNeutral Company and allocated towards a carbon offset project selected by the winner.

To date, we have recognized more than 60 colleagues and purchased 292 short tons of Carbon Offsets through our Award program. These offsets, in combination with event offsetting purchases include a total of 646 short tons of carbon offsets in support of a number of Carbon Neutral projects, including:

    • Jilin Methane Capture (China) (PDF)

  • IHS recognizes that it is important to our success that we are advocates of sustainable efforts, we act as role models and we drive the benefits to our customers and communities. Our colleagues around the globe are engaged and lead efforts to reduce our waste, manage energy use and efficiency, and incorporate more environmentally preferred purchasing practices throughout our supply chain.

We recognize that success in this area is a combination of both large and small acts that all add up to make a difference. Recognizing these efforts and learning from progress is an important component of addressing our opportunities. Here are some examples of IHS colleagues making a difference in their area of influence.

    Colleague Commitment in Action

Reducing impacts from printed products in our IHS office in Coulsdon, U.K.: Our global production services manager worked with our print vendors to introduce and implement Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) scheme accredited paper stocks for all IHS Jane's commercial hardcopy products. Since 2009, FSC and PEFC accredited paper is used to produce all 81 IHS Jane's printed products.

Energy-Efficiency through Company-Colleague Partnering at our IHS office in Cambridge, Mass, USA.: The Cambridge office supports comprehensive home energy assessments that evaluate home energy usage and identifies areas for improvement. This program enables colleagues to save an average of $257 annually on their home energy bills and 1,875 tons of carbon emissions.

Working with customers to reduce waste through data delivery changes at our IHS office in Calgary, Canada : Colleagues in Canada have eliminated 7,584 compact discs a year, translating to approximately $34,000 a year in savings. We are working with customers to switch from multiple CDs to one DVD data delivery. In addition, for each customer switch, IHS plants a tree with Tree Canada.

Streamlining to a paperless process for requesting a new certificate of insurance. More than 1,000 certificates, which are renewed annually, are now available completely digital instead of hard copy. Certificates are now archived on CD instead of printed and bound. This change has reduced complexity and increased ease of access associated with Certificates of Insurance that accompany sales contracts. There is no paper needed, thereby reducing the related carbon footprint; enabling access in real time to speed service for colleagues and customers.

While we work at addressing the IHS company operations and overall footprint, we are also committed to further improving positive environmental impacts through our customer base. IHS environment solutions help companies around the world manage environmental health and safety (EHS) and sustainability programs - from the corporate level down to individual facilities.

    IHS Stakeholders and Partnerships

Success does not happen alone. We continue to forge meaningful partnerships and strategic alliances with stakeholders in the area of Corporate Sustainability. This includes our investor community, customers, colleagues, and our strategic and supply chain partners.

Some of our key alliances and partnerships include:

    climate-registry-logo.gif
    The Climate Registry

. IHS has been a GRI Organizational Stakeholder , since 2007. We assist organizations in their efforts to provide accurate and timely reporting of emissions data. Our software enables organizations to provide total emissions management that supports initiatives for environmental stewardship.

    WEF-logo.gif
IHS Joined the Partnering Against Corruption Initiative (PACI) in 2009
: In 2004, the World Economic Forum created an international initiative which would combat corruption called the Partnering Against Corruption Initiative (PACI) . The PACI's mission is: "To develop multi-industry principles and practices that will result in a competitive level playing field based on integrity, fairness and ethical conduct." Recognizing the parallel to our own values, on August 24, 2009, IHS signed with PACI joining 140 signatory companies worldwide. More than half of the signatories are also our customers or vendors. Joining them in this initiative is a highly public way to demonstrate our commitment to ethical business conduct.
