  • The ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) establishes rules of safety governing the design, fabrication, maintenance and inspection of boilers and pressure vessels, power producing machines (and associated subsystems) and nuclear power plant components. The objective of the rules is to provide a margin for deterioration in service.

The ASME BPVC today encompasses 14 sections, 30 volumes and more than 16,000 pages in total.

Between BPVC release dates, addendums and supplements are added when advancements are achieved in design and materials and real world experience provides valuable insight.

BPVC purchasers receive further value through ASME's ongoing conformity-assessment programs, referenced and related standards, training courses, technical publications and industry conferences.

Originating in 1914, ASME BPVC is now adopted in part or in its entirety by all 50 states and numerous municipalities and territories of the United States and all the provinces of Canada. More than 92,000 copies of the BPVC Codes are in use in 100 countries around the world.

The Code is kept current by the Boiler and Pressure Committee, a volunteer group of more than 950 engineers.

  • The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) provides rules of safety governing the design, fabrication and inspection of boilers, pressure vessels and nuclear power plant components during construction. The BPVC consists of twelve volumes.

The ASME BPVC is relevant for:

    • Boilers and pressure vessels
    • Power producing machines (and associated subsystems)
    • Nuclear facility components

This collection contains all sections of the code as well as code cases, interpretations, addenda and supplements.

The BPVC from ASME is divided into the following 14 sections:

Section I Rules for construction of power boilers
    Section II Material specifications
Section IID Material specifications part D properties
Section IIDM Material specifications part D properties, metric
Section III Rules for construction of nuclear facility components
Section IV Rules for construction of heating boilers
    Section V Non-destructive examination
Section VI Recommended rules for the care and operation of heating boilers
Section VII Recommended guidelines for the care of power boilers
Section VIII Rules for construction of pressure vessels
Section IX Welding and brazing qualifications
Section X Fiber-reinforced plastic pressure vessels
Section XI Rules for in-service inspection of nuclear power plant components
Section XII Rules for construction and continued service of transport tanks
Code Cases Boilers and pressure vessels
    Code Cases Nuclear components

Numerous municipalities, territories and every state in the United States and all the provinces of Canada have adopted the ASME BPVC, in part or in its entirety.

IHS provides the option of either purchasing the entire BPVC Code or just the sections that pertain to your project.

Historical versions of the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code are available for the code years of 1983 forward.
