World Analysis - Toluene & Xylenes
IHS Chemical World Analysis - Toluene & Xylenes is an annual study that covers historical trends and forecasts for toluene & xylenes supply/demand fundamentals over a 16-year period (five-year history, base year, ten-year forecast). Clients receive detailed data on toluene & xylenes and major derivatives in 10 geographic regions with ten-year market forecasts.

Demand for mixed xylenes is dominated by paraxylene which consumes nearly eighty percent of the world’s mixed xylenes production. This is also the fastest growing outlet for mixed xylenes as the paraxylene is used to produce polyester fiber, film or bottle resin. Mixed xylenes are also used to make orthoxylene and metaxylene and they find outlets as a solvent in the coatings and inks industries. There are a variety of routes to mixed xylenes with reformate being the main source of supply. Other sources of supply also include toluene conversion and there is a small amount extracted from pygas.
Toluene has quite a wide variety of application. Approximately fifty percent of the world’s toluene is converted into benzene and mixed xylenes through several different processes. These vary from the STDP reaction where a paraxylene rich mixed xylenes stream and benzene are produced to the HDA process where the toluene is hydrodealkylated to benzene and methane. The later process is the only on purpose route to produce benzene and is high cost and as such is usually regarded as the source for the marginal ton. Reformate accounts for seventy five percent of the world’s toluene production with a further twenty percent coming from pygas. Small amounts are produced as a bi-product of styrene production and by the extraction of coal tar.
IHS Chemical World Analysis - Toluene & Xylenes examines historical trends and long term projections for supply/demand, production, capacity, and trade of the global toluene & xylenes industry over a 16-year period (five-year history, base year, ten-year forecast).
Included with the IHS Chemical World Analysis - Toluene & Xylenes is 12-month’s access to IHS Chemical’s online capacity and supply/demand databases, with updates to the capacity database as they occur and one update to the supply/demand database. The study’s conclusions, with text and graphs, are provided online; as are the Excel files for the supply/demand flat file and the regional supply/demand graphs.
